(COLOMBO) – The Sri Lanka Army was deployed at most State hospitals on Thursday as minor staff struck work in order to ensure the smooth operation of the health services in the country.
The Army was called in as an emergency measure following a request by the Ministry of Health to Army Commander Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage.
The troops have ben deployed at 13 key State hospitals including the central medical facility in the commercial capital of Colombo.
At present there are some 500 troops deployed in these hospitals and the Commander of the Army has instructed the Security Forces Commanders to stand by with additional troops for further deployment in case of any emergencies, while ensuring the smooth function of the health services is free from inconveniences to the public.
