SA20 (Game 2) – Mumbai Indians (Cape Town) vs Durban Super Giants
The SA20 kicked off in grand fashion, following an unfortunately start to the tournament. The second match between MI Cape Town and Durban’s Super Giants proved to be quite the thriller with more than 360 runs scored on the night although ending in rain. Heinrich Klaasen emerged as the undisputed hero, steering his team to victory with a little bit of help from DLS.
MI Cape Town started on a high note, with Ryan Rickelton’s explosive innings of 87 runs off just 51 balls, complemented by late fireworks from Liam Livingstone and Kieron Pollard. Despite the early inroads made by Durban’s Super Giants’ bowlers, including Keemo Paul’s two crucial wickets, the other failed to chip in, resulting in a monstrous total of 208 for 6 being set.
Durban’s Super Giants faced early setbacks in their chase, losing star opener Quinton de Kock quickly and three wickets within the first seven overs. However, the match took a dramatic turn as Heinrich Klaasen took center stage. With Matthew Breetzke providing valuable support. Klaasen’s explosive half-century in just 25 balls set the momentum for a spectacular finish to the game but rain came down with 34 runs needed. His onslaught, comprising 8 sixes and 4 boundaries, almost single-handedly sealed the game for the Durban Super Giants.
Kagiso Rabada managed to dismiss Klaasen, providing a glimmer of hope for MI Cape Town, but the rain intervened, halting the proceedings. Despite the rain interruption, Klaasen’s heroics ensured that Durban’s Super Giants were ahead by 11 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. The persistent rain denied MI Cape Town any chance of a comeback, and the match concluded with Durban’s Super Giants celebrating a victorious start to their campaign and the tournament.
