Sri Lanka celebrates a golden day in Ranchi as Chamod Yodasinghe and Pasindu Malshan strike gold while Viknaraj Vakshan adds a silver at the South Asian Athletics Championship 2025.
Sri Lanka got off to a flying start at the 4th South Asian Senior Athletics Championship held at the Birsa Munda Football Stadium in Ranchi, India, winning two gold medals and a silver medal on the opening day. The performances highlighted Sri Lanka’s growing strength in both track and field as athletes delivered results against top regional rivals.
Chamod Yodasinghe claimed the spotlight by becoming South Asia’s fastest man, storming to victory in the Men’s 100m final with a sensational 10.30 seconds. His sprint not only secured gold but also set a new championship record, making his name one to watch in future Asian competitions.
Pasindu Malshan delivered Sri Lanka’s first gold of the meet earlier in the day, winning the Men’s Triple Jump with a leap of 16.19 metres. His performance underlined Sri Lanka’s consistency in field events and set the tone for the rest of the team to follow.
Adding to the medal tally, Viknaraj Vakshan produced a gutsy run in the Men’s 5000m, clinching silver after a hard-fought race against top endurance runners from the region. His effort brought Sri Lanka’s medal count to three on the very first day of the championship.
The 2025 championship in Ranchi features athletes from six South Asian nations—India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives—competing across multiple track and field disciplines. With a strong start led by Yodasinghe, Malshan, and Vakshan, Sri Lanka has already set high expectations for the remainder of the tournament, aiming to consolidate its position as a powerhouse in South Asian athletics.
