Pakistan’s Tour of New Zealand (1st T20)
In an electrifying T20 encounter at Eden Park, New Zealand emerged victorious against Pakistan, securing an early 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The match witnessed a run-fest, with over 400 runs scored, as both teams showcased their skills with the bat on what seemed to be a pristine wicket.
Opting to field first after winning the toss, Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi made an early breakthrough by dismissing Devon Conway in the opening over. However, Finn Allen, who got a reprieve on a No Ball, played a blistering innings before falling within the Powerplay. Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell then formed a dynamic partnership, with Mitchell unleashing a flurry of boundaries. Adam Milne contributed with lusty blows, and Mark Chapman’s stellar cameo propelled New Zealand to a formidable total of 226.
Pakistan’s chase was promising, staying ahead of the required rate in the Powerplay and the first 10 overs. Saim Ayub started aggressively, but a run-out ended his brilliant start. Despite positive contributions from Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam, Pakistan faltered due to critical errors. Although Babar scored a quick fifty, the middle and lower order collapsed, turning a potential win into a substantial loss for Pakistan.
In the latter half of the chase, New Zealand’s bowlers, led by the experienced Tim Southee, orchestrated a comeback. Southee’s four-wicket haul, including the crucial wicket of Babar Azam, played a pivotal role. Ish Sodhi’s stunning catch dismissed Fakhar Zaman, and the pacers effectively used slower deliveries in the second half. Ben Sears and Adam Milne also chipped in with wickets as New Zealand secured a comprehensive 45 run victory.
