(COLOMBO) – An enraged mob is alleged to have lynched to death a chain thief at Panadura close to the commercial capital of Colombo, police said on Tuesday.
They said the man had snatched the chain from a woman close to a busy shopping mall in the bustling town of Panadura in broad day light.
Panadura is situated close to the commercial capital of Colombo.
The thief was apprehended by bystanders and later fatally assaulted with clubs and other weapons.
The man was subsequently rushed to a nearby State hospital bus succumbed to his injuries a short while later, according to police.
The police in the meantime have opened a homicide inquiry and are hoping to arrest several suspects with the help of nearby security cameras.
