Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir, has personally stepped in to guarantee maximum security for the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced on Thursday. His assurance follows rising concerns from Sri Lankan officials after recent security incidents in Islamabad. Naqvi confirmed that the issue was taken up directly with Sri Lankan leaders to ensure complete clarity and confidence regarding safety arrangements.
According to Naqvi, the Sri Lankan President contacted Pakistani authorities to express concerns and discuss the current situation. Both governments carefully reviewed security logistics, resulting in the Pakistan Cricket Board confirming that every concern raised by Sri Lanka had been fully addressed by the nation’s top leadership, including the army chief.
The Interior Minister praised Sri Lanka for its decision to continue the cricket tour, describing it as an act of courage and a reflection of the deep trust between both nations. He stressed that the recent security incidents in Islamabad were linked to elements operating out of Afghanistan, highlighting the broader regional challenges Pakistan currently faces.
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, addressing the Senate, said that Sri Lanka had expressed firm support for Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism. The Senate unanimously passed a resolution appreciating Sri Lanka’s solidarity and its bold decision to proceed with the tour despite security concerns.
Naqvi thanked the Senate for approving the resolution, stating that it underscored the strong friendship and longstanding cooperation between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. He confirmed that the tour will move ahead under tightened security measures, ensuring that all players remain fully protected during their stay.
