A shocking allegation claims the government’s negligence turned a natural disaster into a national tragedy, sparking moves toward a criminal case.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP S. M. Marikkar says he intends to file a criminal case against the current government, accusing it of failing to act despite clear and early warnings. He claims the administration must be held responsible for every life lost, arguing that the scale of suffering is as inhumane as the Easter Sunday attack. According to him, the reported death toll is inaccurate and likely far higher.
The MP states that countless citizens lost their lives due to what he describes as incompetence, weakness, and a dangerous lack of preparation and decision-making at the highest levels. He reminds the public that major reservoirs serve critical functions such as electricity generation, agricultural water supply, and flood control. Yet, he alleges that engineers urged a gradual release of water, advice that was ignored. Instead, he claims floodgates were opened suddenly, driven by arrogance and reckless disregard, creating devastation that could have been prevented.
