As Sri Lanka recovers from a devastating natural disaster, a leading JVP-aligned Buddhist monk credits the National People’s Power government for decisive leadership and effective disaster management that, he claims, saved the nation from far worse destruction.
When the recent storm battered Sri Lanka, the country was spared a far more disastrous outcome because the National People’s Power government was in charge, according to the General Secretary of the National Bhikkhu Front, Venerable Wakamulle Uditha Thero. Speaking at a media briefing, the senior monk praised the government’s swift disaster response and coordination during one of the most severe natural calamities the country has faced in recent years.
He stressed that the situation could have turned catastrophic under a previous administration. “If a previous government had been in power instead of a government of the National People’s Power, it would have been difficult to even guess what our fate would have been in the face of this great disaster,” Venerable Uditha Thero said.
He further noted that this view was not driven by political bias, adding that it is something that “everyone who thinks without malice or envy unanimously accepts.” According to him, the efficiency of emergency services, disaster relief operations, and recovery planning showed a clear difference in governance.
The monk also pointed out that Sri Lanka’s disaster management response has drawn positive attention beyond local borders. He said foreign leaders, international observers, and members of the global public have expressed appreciation for how Sri Lanka handled the emergency. He emphasized that strong leadership, effective coordination, and public trust were key to minimizing damage and safeguarding lives.
