A late night road accident involving a sitting MP escalates as police confirm plans to make an arrest while victims remain hospitalized and investigations continue.
A police team has been dispatched to the National Hospital to arrest Jathika Jana Balawegaya Member of Parliament Asoka Ranwala, who is currently receiving treatment following a road accident at the Denimulla junction in Sapugaskanda on December 11, according to Sapugaskanda Police.
Police stated that the accident occurred at around 7.45 pm when a jeep driven by the MP collided with a car at the busy junction. Three people travelling in the car, including a small child, sustained injuries in the collision.
The injured child has been admitted to the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital in Colombo for specialized treatment. The other two injured individuals, along with MP Asoka Ranwala, were initially taken to the Kiribathgoda Base Hospital and later transferred to the National Hospital for further medical care, police confirmed.
When questioned by journalists on whether the MP had been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, police stated that this aspect would be investigated following his arrest. Authorities emphasized that all legal procedures would be followed in accordance with traffic law and criminal investigation protocols.
Efforts are ongoing to contact all parties involved in the incident to obtain further information and formal statements.
Meanwhile, Police Media Spokesperson ASP F.U. Wootler addressed the incident during a police media briefing held in Colombo on December 12. Responding to questions from journalists, he confirmed that three vehicles connected to the accident have been taken into police custody for forensic and mechanical examination.
He further stated that four individuals are currently undergoing treatment in hospital and that attempts to record statements have so far been unsuccessful due to their medical condition. Investigations into the Sapugaskanda road accident are continuing.
