A serious road accident in Sapugaskanda escalates into a criminal case as police arrest a senior political figure while multiple victims remain hospitalized.
Former Speaker and National People’s Power Member of Parliament Ashoka Ranwala has been arrested by the Sapugaskanda Police in connection with a road accident that occurred on December 11.
Police stated that the MP was taken into custody on charges of reckless driving and failure to take necessary steps to avoid the accident. Authorities confirmed that Ashoka Ranwala is currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital, where he remains under police protection.
According to police reports, the accident took place in the Denimalla area of Sapugaskanda when the jeep driven by the former Speaker collided with another car. The collision resulted in injuries to three passengers travelling in the car.
Those injured include a 25 year old woman, her six month old baby, and the woman’s 55 year old grandmother. All three victims were admitted to hospital following the crash. Police further stated that the infant was transferred to the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital in Colombo for specialized treatment.
Investigations into the Sapugaskanda road accident are continuing, with police examining the circumstances that led to the collision and the conduct of the driver at the time of the incident. Authorities emphasized that legal action has been initiated in line with traffic law and criminal procedure, regardless of political status.
