A high-profile drug raid near Kandy sparks public attention as the daughter of a sitting Deputy Mayor is arrested in the morning and released on bail by evening.
The daughter of the Deputy Mayor of the Kandy Municipal Council, who represents the National People’s Power Party, has been released on bail following her arrest in a police drug raid.
The 26 year old woman and her boyfriend were produced before the Teldeniya Magistrate’s Court and granted bail on a surety of Rs. 100,000 each. The arrests were made during a police operation conducted in the Kandy area targeting a party allegedly organised through Facebook.
According to a police statement, officers raided a party held at a hotel located near the Victoria Reservoir within the Teldeniya Police Division. During the operation, 22 men and four women were taken into custody. Police said they seized a range of illegal narcotics including 4,134 milligrams of ice, 1,875 milligrams of hash, 2,769 milligrams of kush, 390 milligrams of cocaine, 804 milligrams of mushroom, 13 flower petals, and 12 illegal cigarettes.
The suspects are reported to be residents of several areas including Kandy, Mulleriyawa, Hatton, Pilagala, Athurugiriya, Kotagedara, Homagama, Dompe, Embilipitiya, Trincomalee and Ja Ela. They are aged between 18 and 31. The female suspects, aged between 21 and 26, are residents of Kandy, Negombo and Pudaluoya.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
