A viral incident at Sirimavo Bandaranaike College has reignited national debate as school authorities issue a firm statement defending their awards process and condemning what they describe as an undisciplined public protest by a former student.
The story that once shook the country involving Sirimavo Bandaranaike College has returned to public attention following a controversial statement made by a student during a recent awards ceremony.
In response, the school has issued an official statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the incident and defending the integrity of its Colours Ceremony and awards selection process. The statement, released on social media, begins with a brief historical context, noting that Sirimavo Bandaranaike College, with a legacy spanning over eight hundred years, has produced students who have achieved national and international success in sports, co-curricular activities and academics.
The statement explains that the Colours Ceremony for students who excelled in sports during 2023 and 2024 was held on 19 December 2025. This event, organized after a lapse of seven years, was conducted under the leadership of the current Principal, Dr. Sumedha Jayaweera, and was described as a significant milestone in the school’s history.
According to the school, one of the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation of the “Best Sportswoman” award, an honour given only once in a student’s school career. The statement outlines the clearly defined criteria for eligibility, which had been communicated well in advance to all potential candidates. These included securing first place at the All-Ceylon level in a single event, holding an All-Ceylon record, competing in a sport with wide national participation, achieving top placements with records, and securing a recognized position at an international competition.
The school emphasized that the primary purpose of the Varna Pradhan is not merely awarding medals, but fostering discipline, resilience, sportsmanship and the ability to celebrate others’ achievements. It was also stated that all sportswomen were given fair opportunities to appeal decisions or raise concerns prior to the ceremony, and that no objections were raised by students or parents at those stages.
The statement strongly condemned the actions of a squash player, now an alumna, who raised a personal grievance during the ceremony despite having received her colours and a special award. The school described this act as damaging to its reputation and as setting a poor example for future students. It further clarified that the squash player did not receive the “Best Sportswoman” award because she did not meet the criteria, not due to absence from rehearsals.
Concluding the statement, the school reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, transparency and the values it seeks to instill in its students, while standing firmly by the award decision.
