Deputy Minister T.B. Sarath says the NPP government is compressing decades of stalled development into a single five-year term, backed by savings, discipline, and surplus funds in the treasury.
Deputy Minister T.B. Sarath says the National People’s Power government is working to achieve the country’s fifty-year development objectives within its five-year term in office. Addressing criticism and speculation about the government’s longevity, he stressed that this administration is not a short-lived experiment but one focused on long-term national transformation.
He explained that since assuming office, the government has already managed to save nearly fifty billion rupees within a short span of two years. This, he said, was achieved after taking charge of a country weakened by shortages, queues, and economic instability. According to the Deputy Minister, disciplined governance and strict financial management enabled these savings.
He added that the funds collected through these measures were redirected toward public welfare, particularly during times of natural disasters and emergencies. He described this approach as unprecedented, claiming it marks the first time in Sri Lanka’s history that a government has demonstrated such structured fiscal discipline while prioritizing people-centered development.
Further emphasizing the government’s economic strength, the Deputy Minister revealed that an additional surplus exceeding fifty billion rupees is currently available in the national treasury. He noted that this financial stability places the NPP government in a strong position to pursue development, social protection, and economic recovery without placing further burdens on citizens.
