The Sri Lanka Police have issued a detailed follow up statement addressing the incident involving a police constable attached to the Suriyakanda Police Station and National People’s Power Member of Parliament Shantha Padmakumara.
According to the police statement, the suspended police constable and his wife, both formerly attached to the Suriyakanda Police Station, have made public comments to several media institutions expressing critical views of the Sri Lanka Police in relation to the incident. Police acknowledged these statements while emphasizing that investigations have not been ignored or abandoned.
Police clarified that the individuals accused of assaulting the police constable and allegedly stealing his motorcycle have not yet been arrested. However, authorities firmly rejected allegations suggesting that no investigations were carried out following the officer’s complaint.
The statement confirms that further investigations are currently underway, led by the Kolonna Police Station together with the Embilipitiya Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau. These inquiries are based on formal complaints lodged by the police constable and his wife at the Kolonna Police.
Police further stated that on the night of the incident, officers engaged in mobile night patrol duties from the Kolonna Police Station visited the scene and initiated preliminary investigations. During this process, the police constable’s motorcycle was located at the scene and taken into custody as part of the investigation.
Statements have since been recorded from the police constable, his wife, and two additional individuals. The Police Unit at the Embilipitiya Hospital also issued a Medico Legal Examination Form to the injured officer to document medical findings.
Regarding investigations conducted by the Embilipitiya Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau, police confirmed that statements have been obtained from three residents living near the alleged assault location, along with ten other individuals, including the person who transported the injured officer to hospital.
