From daily wages to national recovery, estate workers in the hill country show how compassion rises even in hardship.
A group of estate workers from the Kotiyagala Estate in Bagawanthalawa has made a heartfelt contribution of Rs. 108,000 to the Rebuild Sri Lanka Fund, a government initiative launched to support recovery efforts following the devastation caused by the Ditwah cyclone. The donation was officially handed over on the 27th to Nuwara Eliya District MPs Manjula Suraweerarachchi and Krishnan Kalaichelvi.
The workers, who reside in the NC section of the Kotiyagala Estate under the Bagawanthalawa Plantation Company, collected this amount by setting aside portions of their daily wages. Contributions were also gathered from the earnings of their children, many of whom are employed in different parts of the island including Colombo. The total sum was credited to the Rebuild Sri Lanka Fund and symbolically handed over at the Kovil premises within the estate.
Receiving the donation, National People’s Power Nuwara Eliya District MP Manjula Suraweerarachchi said that people across the country are contributing generously to the fund. He stated that this particular donation holds special significance as it comes from estate workers who depend on daily wages for survival and who have placed their trust in President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the current government.
The MP further said that the funds received will be directed towards essential projects aimed at rebuilding the country through the Rebuild Sri Lanka Fund, ensuring transparency and impact in post disaster recovery efforts.
Estate workers who addressed the gathering said that they had already provided as much assistance as possible to families affected by the disaster. They added that this contribution was made with the belief that collective effort and unity are vital for national recovery, and expressed hope that more citizens would step forward to support the government’s rebuilding initiatives.
