(COLOMBO) – A Sri Lankan couple was taken into custody after they had allegedly left their three children locked up in their family home alone and left on a superstitious spiritual journey, local media reported on Thursday.
The children aged three, five and eight were rescued by police who had to break into the house following information received by worried neighbours.
The children showed signs of influenza and were removed to a local Government hospital.
It was revealed that the children had been alone at home for three days surviving on biscuits and bread left by their parents.
The incident was reported from Deegalla in Kuliyapitiya some 82 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo.
The couple was promptly arrested on their arrival and were to be produced before a local Magistrate late on Thursday.
