A late-night collision near the former Speaker’s residence has left his wife hospitalized, with police confirming alcohol involvement by the other driver.
Former Speaker Asoka Ranwala’s wife has been hospitalized following a road accident that occurred late last night near their residence, police said.
According to the Byagama Police, the accident took place on the night of January 16 along the Kelaniya–Biyagama Road, close to Mr. Ranwala’s home. Initial investigations reveal that the incident happened as the vehicle driven by Mr. Ranwala’s wife was attempting to enter the road.
At that moment, another car traveling from the Kelaniya direction reportedly collided with her vehicle, causing significant impact. A police officer who was assigned to night security duty at the residence witnessed the aftermath and immediately informed the Byagama Police, enabling a rapid response.
Police investigations have identified the driver of the other vehicle as a resident of the Kalutara North area. Preliminary findings indicate that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, raising serious concerns about drunk driving and road safety.
The MP’s wife sustained injuries in the collision and was rushed to hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment. Hospital sources say her condition is being closely monitored, though further details about the extent of her injuries have not yet been released.
The Byagama Police have launched a full investigation into the accident and are continuing inquiries into the actions of the driver involved. Legal action is expected once investigations are completed.
The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over reckless and alcohol-impaired driving on busy suburban roads, particularly during late-night hours.
