Three people have been killed following a reported shooting in the small town of Lake Cargelligo in central New South Wales, according to police. The incident occurred at about 16:40 local time on Friday, when emergency services were called to reports of gunfire in a residential area. Two women and one man were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth person was taken to hospital with serious but stable injuries. Police said the situation remained active in the hours following the attack, with residents urged to avoid the area and remain indoors as investigations continued.
Authorities confirmed that officers were responding to the incident on Walker Street near Yelkin Street, where the shooting was believed to have taken place. Local media reported that the suspected gunman had fled the scene and was still at large, prompting a significant police response. Heavily armed tactical units were deployed as part of a search operation, and reports suggested the suspect may have escaped in a vehicle belonging to the local council. The Sydney Morning Herald described the shooting as a suspected domestic violence incident, though police have not yet formally confirmed a motive.
Lake Cargelligo, which has a population of around 1,500 people, is located in a remote part of New South Wales, making the incident particularly shocking for the close-knit community. The shooting comes just weeks after another deadly attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney that claimed 15 lives, renewing public concern about violent crime in Australia. As investigations continue, police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward, while local residents wait anxiously for updates and reassurance that the threat has passed.
