A controversial selection bout in Horana has triggered outrage, allegations of favoritism, and serious questions about governance, police misconduct, and the integrity of Sri Lanka’s boxing administration.
A Selection Bout That Shook the Arena
In parallel with the National Boxing Championships held at the Horana Urban Council Sports Ground, selection bouts for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games were also conducted. During one such crucial bout, a boxer from Infinity Sports Club, a trainee of Sri Lanka Boxing Association President Anuruddha Bandara and his close associate Dasanayake, faced international medalist Umayanga Mihiran of the Sri Lanka Police Sports Club.
Despite Umayanga Mihiran clearly dominating the bout, with the referee and judges initially acknowledging his superior performance, the final decision was controversially overturned. Following alleged intervention by Dasanayake, victory was awarded to the Infinity Sports Club boxer. The decision immediately sparked fury inside the stadium, with spectators openly protesting as chaos erupted. During the unrest, Dasanayake was reportedly assaulted.
Alleged Threats and Police Misconduct
As tensions escalated, the assistant coach of the Police team raised a formal complaint with Anuruddha Bandara. At this point, Police Inspector Khan Weerasinghe, who was present at the venue, allegedly used both his police authority and his influence within the boxing administration to issue death threats against Janaka Indunil, the chief coach of Umayanga Mihiran. Janaka Indunil subsequently lodged complaints with the Horana Headquarters Police and the Police Commission on the same day.
Who Is Police Inspector Kaan?
Khan Weerasinghe is a former Officer in Charge of the Kaduwela Police Station who previously held politically appointed positions. Although removed after a change of government, he was later appointed to the boxing selection committee despite allegedly lacking the required qualifications. While serving on the committee, he is accused of facilitating foreign tours and opportunities for favored athletes linked to Anuruddha Bandara and Dasanayake.

It is further alleged that he violated sports regulations by serving on the selection committee while drawing a police salary and acting as Team Manager of the national boxing team at the previous IBA World Boxing Championship.
Silence, Favoritism, and Global Fallout
These alleged actions represent a serious breach of sports governance. Critics question why the Ministry of Sports has remained silent. The damage to Umayanga Mihiran’s career is described as significant, with claims that favored athletes continue to receive unjust victories. Despite claims of operating under World Boxing rules, Sri Lanka’s compliance is now questioned, with WB membership alleged to exist in name only.
