(COLOMBO) – A foreign national was the latest person to be killed and three other locals were critically injured on Thursday night as their vehicle rammed into a truck on an expressway at Kerawalapitiya in Sri Lanka’s commercial capital of Colombo, police said on Friday.
They said that the foreign national who was not named died instantly in the crash while the injured were removed to a nearby Government hospital situated close to the crash site.
The incident comes barely a day after the Sri Lankan State Minister of Water Supply Sarath Nishantha and his driver were killed in a similar accident on the same expressway that links the country’s key international airport to other parts of the country.
Fatal accidents on the expressways are frequent in the Island-nation and police has blamed the bulk of them on reckless and undisciplined motorists seeking that extra speed.
Some five people have already died on the expressways during the past 25 days when compared with only five fatalities for the whole of last year, police said.
