After months of delay and public pressure, Sri Lanka’s long vacant Auditor General post is filled, marking a rare moment of consensus in the country’s stalled constitutional process.
The Constitutional Council, which met today, has approved the appointment of L. S. I. Jayaratne as Sri Lanka’s new Auditor General, ending a prolonged institutional stalemate. Mrs. Jayaratne, who previously served as Senior Deputy Auditor General, received unanimous approval from the Constitutional Council, reflecting broad political agreement.
The post had remained vacant for over nine months following the retirement of the former Auditor General, after multiple presidential nominees were rejected. Growing public concern over accountability and governance intensified calls for an acceptable appointment, with even the Mahanayake Theros submitting recommendations. The approval is widely seen as a step toward restoring confidence in Sri Lanka’s audit and oversight institutions.
