Bold allegations meet a firm denial as India insists no force was used and urges a humanitarian approach to long-standing fishermen disputes between the two neighbours.
The Indian High Commission in Colombo has firmly denied allegations that Indian security personnel attacked Sri Lankan fishermen at sea on January 29. Responding to media queries, the High Commission said a detailed investigation found no involvement by either the Indian Navy or the Indian Coast Guard in any such incident.
A spokesperson for the High Commission emphasized India’s consistent stance that fishermen livelihood issues must be addressed from a humanitarian perspective and that force should never be used. The statement added that India remains in constant contact with the Sri Lankan government to manage maritime concerns, prevent misunderstandings, and ensure the safety of fishermen operating in shared waters.
