Kandy SC has admitted its once invincible team is destined to end up in the dumps unless something is done to put the administration of the sport back on track following a disastrous show against CR and FC last week which saw them crash to a 38-26 defeat.
Having gone into the match with an unbeaten image and not losing a game on their home ground at Nittawela for 27 years, Kandy SC fell drastically short of expectations and played in patches with defeat a foregone conclusion and their club think-tanks biting their nails expecting the worst.
“Sunday’s loss can be the beginning of a long term setback. Since we are not accustomed in occupying the second place let us get together to stabilize and strengthen the administration to provide a good platform for coaches and players to perform,” Kandy SC president Sarath Perera has conveyed to his Committee in a lengthy broadside after the defeat.
It is also learnt that Kandy SC could not provide a proper water service for members of the visiting CR and FC team after the match while referees and match officials complained of unhygienic toilet facilities.
“The match arrangement committee failed to meet and work out details to ensure smooth functioning of the activities involved during the day. Chief guest Priyantha Ekanayake) a past captain and former president of SLR (Sri Lanka Rugby) and his family should have been given a better reception”, Perera further said in his conveyance to Kandy SC’s committee members.
Contrary to what was reported, Perera also noted that there had been serious lapses on the part of officials responsible for the unveiling of a section of the spectator stands in honour of one of the players, Nigel Ratwatte without naming the shortcomings.
“Both teams ran short of water for washing and bathing after the match and made a mockery of unveiling the Nigel Ratwatte stand. If you don’t want to realize you have failed in your duties, it is a big deficiency in realizing our own shortcomings”, Perera had stated.
After a rest week, Kandy SC’s next outing is against CH and FC on February 3 in Colombo and their next two games in the run-up to the Cup decider are against Havelocks and CR, both return games also in Colombo which makes them appear vulnerable.
