A high-profile CID probe deepens as former MP Hirunika Premachandra faces tough questions over alleged ties to an underworld figure, drawing fresh attention to political accountability and criminal networks.
Former Member of Parliament Hirunika Premachandra has given a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department while being held under a detention order, following allegations of maintaining links with underworld gang leader Kehelbaddara Padma, also known as Mandinu Padmasiri Perera.
Hirunika appeared before the CID at around 9.30 am yesterday after being summoned by investigators and remained there until approximately 12.30 pm, during which officers recorded her statement in detail. The questioning focused on the nature of her alleged association with the underworld leader and whether those links extended into drug trafficking, organised crime, or illicit financial dealings.
Sources say the government is closely monitoring the investigation, given its potential political implications and the seriousness of the allegations. The CID is examining whether any criminal benefits were gained through such associations and if broader networks were involved.
Investigators have already recorded statements from Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa and former Minister Prasanna Ranatunga in connection with the same inquiry, indicating that the probe extends beyond a single individual.
A senior CID official confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that statements will be obtained from several other former ministers and MPs suspected of having connections to the incident. Authorities say further action will depend on evidence uncovered as the inquiry progresses.
