Acting Public Security Minister Sunil Watagala says ministerial convoys and security vehicles are deployed strictly on intelligence advice, not political privilege.
Public Security Acting Minister Sunil Watagala has defended the use of multiple security vehicles and motorcycles by ministers, stating that such arrangements are based entirely on intelligence assessments and national security protocols.
Responding to criticism raised during a Sirasa Channel program, Watagala addressed concerns that leaders who once rejected privilege are now seen traveling with convoys and helicopters. “You too should not prepare, they said, they said, now say it is the same. No. We are different. I do not know if such a convoy of vehicles went when the Police Minister went to a ceremony.
I am saying that when a police station is opened, two bicycles and another vehicle go, it is not something we can say. It is something that those guys do based on information provided by intelligence agencies.”
He emphasized that security deployments follow threat assessments rather than personal preference.
