Allegations of a multi-million-rupee overseas employment fraud and a controversial playground payout spark explosive debate in the House.
A heated political storm erupted in Parliament after MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake alleged that close relatives of a National People’s Power candidate were involved in a large-scale Japan job scam. According to the MP, the son and daughter-in-law of Leelarathna Narada, who contested the Thalangama division, promised overseas employment in Japan and collected Rs. 2 million from each applicant.
He claimed that families in the Kandy area had even mortgaged their homes to raise the funds, amounting to crores of rupees. The MP tabled documents in the House, noting that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had signed the marriage certificate of Sudharmika Biloni, who is allegedly linked to the fraud.
The MP also raised corruption concerns over the Sekkhuwatta playground in Ja-Ela, stating that Rs. 190 million of public funds was being prepared for payment despite the ground being under Municipal Council control for 52 years. He described the move as blatant theft and urged the Prime Minister and relevant minister to launch an immediate investigation.
Commenting on parliamentary pension amendments, he clarified he does not require a pension and insisted any legal changes must apply from the date of signing.
