Former First Lady summoned as investigators widen scrutiny into alleged misuse of state funds during Ranil Wickremesinghe’s presidency.
Maithri Wickremesinghe, wife of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, has been summoned to appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department on February 20. The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court was informed of the summons on February 18 as part of an ongoing financial misconduct investigation linked to the previous administration.
Authorities state that her testimony is required in connection with the alleged misuse of state funds. The probe reportedly centers on expenditure approvals, overseas visits, and private engagements that may have involved public money. Officials emphasize that recording her statement is a standard procedural step aimed at gathering evidence and clarifying the scope of the alleged irregularities.
In a related development, Saman Ekanayake, connected to a 2023 United Kingdom visit by then President Ranil Wickremesinghe, was released on bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today.
