Parliament erupts as rival MPs trade explosive claims over the controversial coal procurement, dragging powerful political families and alleged connections into the spotlight.
The coal tender belongs to Balthazaar’s brother-in-law.
National People’s Power Member of Parliament Mr. Najith Indika said that the tender to bring coal to Sri Lanka had been given to the company of a friend of Mr. Yoshitha Rajapakse for many years. He made this claim while addressing the heated coal procurement debate in Parliament, alleging long standing favoritism and lack of transparency in the coal tender process linked to the Norochcholai power plant.
But denying the accusations, Member of Parliament DV Chanaka countered that the coal tender was not won by a friend of Yoshitha Rajapakse, but by the brother-in-law of the Mayor of Colombo Mrs. Vraie Kelly Balthazaar, shifting the focus of the controversy.
