Wallabie great David Campese who was down in Sri Lanka at the invitation of Zahira College to celebrate their centenary year of rugby met the affable CR&FC member, Bar Secretary and stalwart Jeremy David at the Mecca of Sri Lanka Rugby earlier today.
The Aussie legend Campese who was the toast of international rugby in the 80’s and early 90’s was also part of the Nick Far Jones led Australian champion side that won the World Cup in 1991.
Meanwhile, Jeremy David speaking to The Morning Telegraph said “David Campese was one of my childhood heroes and it was certainly a dream come true to have met the great legend in person.”
Jeremy David who studied at S.Thomas’ Preparatory School Colombo 3 during his early days later moved to the hill capital of Kandy where he completed his education at Trinity College.
Incidentally Jeremy David was part of the invincible Tyrell Rajapaksa led Trinity College rugby side of 1987 that went on to remain unbeaten and win both the schools league and knock-out tournaments that year.
Some of the members of that side such as Shah Doole, Imthi Marikkar and Nilantha Ratnayake subsequently went onto don the national jersey with great distinction and pride. Other team members such as Rajiv Bandaranaike (Planting), Lohan Ratwatte (Politics), Roshan Weerasinghe (Aviation) and Sumith Atapattu (Medicine – Veterinarian) chose various other professional fields.
During his visit, Campese also conducted a training programme for rugby coaches that was well received by those that attended it, the sponsors and also the entire rugby fraternity in the country.
David Campese was also invited to be the Chief Guest at the second-round game league rugby encounter that is to be contested between CR&FC and Havelocks SC.
