A growing political debate erupts in Sri Lanka as a senior minister defends CID Director Shani Abeysekara’s independence while viral images fuel public scrutiny and speculation.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala has publicly defended Criminal Investigation Department Director Shani Abeysekara, insisting the senior police officer remains an independent investigator who has never actively participated in political platforms. The minister’s remarks come as public debate intensifies across Sri Lanka over the role and neutrality of key law enforcement figures.
Speaking during a program on Independent Television, Wijepala stated that Shani Abeysekara has not taken part in any political events organized by the government or any other political group. According to the minister, Abeysekara’s reputation was unfairly damaged during earlier periods of his career when he faced suspension, imprisonment, and professional hardship.

Wijepala emphasized that apart from two occasions when Abeysekara spoke about the injustice he experienced during his service, the CID chief has avoided political engagement. The minister stressed that the government acted responsibly by restoring Abeysekara to duty and ensuring he regained the service benefits he had lost.
He further described Abeysekara as a fearless and highly skilled investigator within Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department. According to Wijepala, the senior officer is known for conducting complex investigations without bowing to privilege or political pressure, a reputation that has caused discomfort among certain politicians.
However, the minister’s comments arrive amid fresh online controversy. Photographs circulating on social media appear to show Abeysekara attending a National People’s Power forum for retired police officers held in Maharagama on June 9, 2024, prompting renewed debate over political neutrality.
