Allegations that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa mole planted in SJB
(COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka’s main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) were heading for a serious ‘home and home’ clash after the party accepted a former Army Commander Daya Ratnayake into its ranks.
Ratnayake’s inclusion drew anger from a former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka who is a current Member of Parliament for the SJB in the 225 Assembly.
Fonseka was the Army Commander that led his forces to crush the separatist Tamil Tigers in 2009 but was later jailed after he unsuccessfully contested against the ruling Rajapaksa family for the Presidential election in 2010.
General (Rtd) Daya Ratnayake
Ratnayake was the then serving Army Commander during Fonseka’s arrest and a close ally of the ruling Rajapaksa family.
According to SJB senior insiders Ratnayake’s inclusion to the party has created confusion and anger among the party hierarchy and have called on the party leader Sajith Premadasa to have an immediate re-think on the matter at the earliest because at the end of the day the country has entered an election year.
MP Sarath Fonseka urged Premadasa to remove former Army Commander Daya Ratnayake from the party claiming otherwise that the party would have to face serious consequences.
Fonseka said he would not leave the party but would have to work against the appointment of Ratnayake.
