Sri Lanka’s boxing greats were celebrated in a grand ceremony graced by the Cuban Ambassador and Indian boxing star Vinod Sukumaran, who pledged support to develop the sport and nurture underprivileged talent in the country.
The Ceylon Boxing Federation successfully organized a grand Felicitation Ceremony to honour Sri Lanka’s veteran boxing legends last Saturday, marking a significant moment in the nation’s sporting history. The event was conducted at a high standard, celebrating the invaluable contributions of former boxers who have shaped the sport over the decades.
The ceremony was graced by Her Excellency Patricia Lázara Pego Guerra, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, who attended as the Chief Guest. In her address, she commended the Federation for its efforts in recognizing and honouring the country’s boxing veterans. She expressed her delight at witnessing distinguished figures such as Sumith Liyanage being felicitated for their service to the sport. Ambassador Guerra further emphasized her willingness to support the future development of boxing in Sri Lanka. She encouraged the Federation to formally communicate with her office, assuring assistance through appropriate diplomatic and sporting channels.
Adding international prominence to the event, Indian professional boxing star Vinod Kalarickal Sukumaran attended as a Guest of Honour. He expressed his gratitude to the Federation for the invitation and praised the initiative as a meaningful tribute to boxing legends. He also conveyed his readiness to extend support to underprivileged Sri Lankan boxers, highlighting the importance of regional collaboration in nurturing talent.
