MP Ravi Karunanayake criticizes the government’s inconsistent messaging on Iran, warns against the erosion of Central Bank independence, and slams new tax laws as a violation of human rights amid rising electricity tariffs and fuel costs.
MP Ravi Karunanayake has expressed concern over the diminishing independence of the Central Bank, stating that despite needing to remain neutral amid the current economic situation, the institution now appears to be operating in alignment with the government. He warned that this trend is detrimental to the country’s future progress.
Speaking at a media briefing, Karunanayake emphasized that maintaining institutional independence and accountability is essential for governance. Commenting on the new Inland Revenue Act, he argued that it even violates human rights. He questioned the system of taxing individuals based on self assessments and criticized provisions that allow authorities to summon taxpayers before court if they fail to pay within six months. He urged that humanitarian considerations must be taken into account.
The MP also noted that with global fuel prices having risen by approximately 30 percent, the government should manage the burden in a way that provides relief to the people. He further stated that reports of a 13 percent electricity tariff increase from next month would push citizens further into hardship.
Highlighting inconsistencies within the government, Karunanayake remarked, “The Iranian Ambassador says one thing, the President says another. In such situations, we must respond to issues practically, responsibly, and with courage.”
He reiterated that the government must intervene immediately to control the rising cost of living and affirmed that as the opposition, he would continue to stand with the suffering people.
