South Africa Under-19 walloped Sri Lanka U19, securing a semi final spot in the process. Pretorius and Norton led the charge the first innings, posting a defendable total, but it Maphaka who turned up for the proteas with another flurry of wickets. Maphaka downed the Sri Lankans for just 113, winning the game by 119 runs.
Opting to bat first, South Africa U19 saw a solid performance from Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who scored an impressive 71 runs, laying a strong foundation for his team. While other contributions came in, Romashan Pillay struggled to find form. The innings concluded with strong contributions from Riley Norton, Tristan Luus, and Nqobani Mokoena, guiding South Africa U19 to a total of 232 runs. Sri Lanka’s bowlers, including Vishwa Lahiru, Malsha Tharupathi, and Supun Waduge, impressed with two wickets each, putting up a decent bowling performance.
Sri Lanka U19 faced a daunting target but faltered in their batting display. Pulindu Perera, Sineth Jayawardena, and Supun Waduge struggled early on, putting their team under pressure. While Dinura Kalupahana, Hirun Kapurubandara, and Sharujan Shanmuganathan showed intent, their efforts were insufficient. Malsha Tharupathi made a late contribution, but South Africa U19’s Kwena Maphaka dominated the proceedings with an exceptional six-wicket haul. Riley Norton also supported with a four-wicket haul, sealing the victory for South Africa U19.
Kwena Maphaka’s stellar performance marked a record-breaking moment, as he now holds the record for the most 5-wicket hauls in YODIs. Sri Lanka U19’s batting struggles and South Africa U19’s clinical bowling display highlighted the vast gap between the two teams. Sri Lanka U19 will need introspection and adjustments to bounce back in the tournament after this convincing defeat.
