(COLOMBO) – Three couples were rescued from a watery grave during a high tide at a popular beach spot at Panadura close to the Sri Lankan commercial capital of Colombo, police said yesterday.
The group of six was wading in shallow waters when a huge wave dragged them into the deep and none of them were able to swim.
The group was rescued and brought ashore by two alert police lifeguards that were patrolling the area at that time.
The group was later treated for shock and an over consumption of sea water, police said.
Local sea bathers often disregard warning signs on the conditions of the sea and as a result there have been many fatalities from time to time.
“Read the warnings before you take on the sea” is how one senior policeman put it.
