(COLOMBO) – A man was arrested after he is alleged to have severally assaulted his two children and later sent a video recording of the incident to his wife currently employed as a domestic in a West Asian country, police said on Thursday.
The motive for the alleged assault was to force her to send more remittances for his upkeep, police have found out.
The distraught woman had later shared the video on social media that alerted the local police who were able to rescue the children aged five and seven from a house in Lindula in central Sri Lanka.
Investigations have also revealed that the children had been left starving for several days before being beaten up and they were immediately fed by the police officers that rescued them.
The children were later removed to a regional Government hospital for follow up medical treatment.
The man was subsequently arrested and faces several charges including cruelty against children.
