(COLOMBO) – Four Russian tourists were injured when the van in which they were travelling rammed into a truck on the Southern Expressway in Sri Lanka on Friday morning, police said.
They said the proper reason for the collision could not be immediately established but did not rule out excessive speed by either vehicle.
Accidents on the island-nation’s expressways have become more frequent in the recent past with at least 10 people being killed and equal number or more injured from the start of this year.
Earlier this month a prominent Minister was killed along with a police escort on an expressway close to the commercial capital of Colombo.
Investigations had later revealed that the Minister had instructed the driver to travel at maximum speed since he had an early appointment the next day.
The driver survived the crash with minor injuries.
Officials have also conceded that a poor lighting system on the expressways may be a cause for the high rate of accidents since the bulk of them had occurred after dusk.
