(COLOMBO) – A female janitor at Sri Lanka’s main airport was nabbed while trying to smuggle out gold valued at some Rs. 60 million, officials said on Saturday.
The woman attached to a private cleaning company was attached to the Bandaranaike International Airport close to the commercial capital of Colombo.
The woman was nabbed by suspicious sleuths from the Narcotics Control Unit of the Sri Lanka Customs.
The suspect, a 55-year-old woman who lives Veyangoda some 13 miles from the airport, pleaded innocence and said that a woman had handed over the parcel to her in the ladies’ washroom to be taken out of the airport where she was to hand it over to another person and that she would be paid Rs. 60,000.
The gold included gold jewelry weighing 1.4kg, and 1.35kg of gold in gel form which contained around 95 percent pure gold, the officials said.
Sri Lanka Customs have initiated further investigations regarding the incident.
