(COLOMBO) – The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of a police station in rural Sri Lanka surrendered to a local Magistrate on Wednesday in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a female police constable.
The suspect was the OIC of the Kuliyapitiya Police Station located some 82 kilometres from the Sri Lankan commercial capital of Colombo.
He surrendered to the Magistrate through his lawyer and was granted bail on condition that he reports to his senior divisional office on Saturday each week.
Kuliyapitiya Division Senior Superintendent of Police launched an investigation into the alleged incident and subsequently reported the matter to the court.
Police said that apart from legal proceedings, the inspector will also face disciplinary action within the department.
