(COLOMBO) – Four primary students at a school in North-Western Sri Lanka were hospitalized, one in a serious condition after consuming intoxication pills during a class break, police and hospital officials said on Saturday.
They said the incident took place at Maduragoda, Kurunegala some 103 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo.
The Grade Five students were rushed to a nearby Government hospital and later transferred to a larger medical facility as they were in a state of high intoxication, the officials added.
Initial investigations have revealed that one student had stolen the drug from his father who is known to the authorities as a drug addict and has several cases pending against him.
“The students may have consumed the pills out of curiosity never knowing the dangers and the repercussions”, one official said.
Officials are probing to establish the true identity of the pills so that it could help doctors currently caring for the children.
