(COLOMBO) – A Sri Lankan police team is set to leave for the Gulf desert emirate of Dubai in a bid to extradite seven suspected criminals to the country after they were caught up in a night club brawl earlier this week, officials said.
They said a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) would leave for Dubai after the necessary protocol requirements with Interpol and their counterparts in that country are finalized.
However the police or the authorities in Dubai are yet to confirm if the Sri Lankans are in custody or otherwise, according to the officials.
The recent development comes barely two weeks after a suspected Sri Lankan gangster was repatriated to the country from Dubai with the cooperation of Interpol and the local authorities in that country.
Sri Lanka’s Actg. Police Chief Deshabandu Tennakoon has said that they have served Interpol Red Notices on 40-plus suspected Sri Lankan underworld operatives residing in foreign capitals.
“These persons are of interest into police investigations into mass-scale drug trafficking, murder, extortion, money laundering and intimidation and so on.
They use these foreign capitals as a safe haven to conduct their illegal crime activities in the island-nation and elsewhere”, Tennakoon said.
