(COLOMBO) – At least 36 persons including 26 school children were injured after the bus in which they were travelling turned over in Moneragala close to Sri Lanka’s Deep South on Thursday morning, police and hospital officials said.
They said the State-owned public passenger bus was a routine trip to the Moneragala Town when it suddenly skidded and turned over.
The condition of those injured was not life threatening, the officials said.
However the incident sparked-off frightening scenes and confusion as children inside the bus was screaming for help.
Residents along with police and medics were able to remove the injured from the vehicle and rush them to a nearby State hospital.
The cause of the accident is being investigated but police have not ruled out reckless driving.
Moneragala is situated some 267 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo.
