England’s Tour of India 2024 (4th Test)
India’s cricket team weathered England’s spin onslaught to clinch a memorable series victory in the fourth Test match. Led by the resilient partnership of Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel, India overcame England’s formidable challenge to secure a 3-1 series win with one match remaining.
England’s dominance on day two, led by Root’s masterful century and Ollie Robinson’s spirited batting, had initially placed them in a commanding position. Root’s unbeaten 122 gave England 353 runs on the board, however, India fought back admirably and scored 307 before being bundled out in their first innings.
With a lead of 46, the game hung in the balance with advantage in the hands of the English. Needing to post a spirited total and put the host under pressure, the visitors failed to add on to their lead. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Ashwin plundered the English batter for just 145 runs, giving India a target of 192.
Day four of the Test commenced with India firmly in control, thanks to a solid start provided by openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, England fought back valiantly, with Joe Root and Tom Hartley engineering crucial breakthroughs to unsettle the Indian batting lineup. Yet, it was the sixth-wicket duo of Gill and Jurel who rose to the occasion, displaying remarkable patience and skill to guide India to victory. Gill’s composed half-century, devoid of boundaries, and Jurel’s steadfast presence ensured India’s triumph despite England’s relentless pressure.
With this triumph, India extends their remarkable streak of 17 consecutive Test series wins at home, underlining their dominance in familiar conditions. While England fought valiantly, their defeat marked their first series loss under Ben Stokes’ captaincy and Brendon McCullum’s coaching tenure, highlighting the significance of India’s achievement.
