(COLOMBO) – A Chinese woman who dumped her toddler with a Sri Lankan nanny and attempted to flee the country was nabbed shortly before she was to board a flight to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Wednesday morning, police said.
Initial investigations have revealed that the 53-year-old Sri Lankan woman had been employed as a nanny for the suspect and was residing at a rented apartment in Dubai.
The Sri Lankan nanny had to return to the country due to the expiry of her visa.
However the three and a half year toddler fell sick after the departure of the Sri Lankan woman as the two were apparently attached to each other.
The Chinese woman later decided to enter Sri Lanka along with the toddler in a bid to reunite her with the nanny.
However a few days after her arrival into the country the Chinese woman had told the nanny that she was going out to visit the city but failed to return.
A suspicious nanny immediately informed the local police and the authorities at the Bandaranaike International Airport were informed accordingly.
The woman was arrested and was to be produced before a local Magistrate later in the day while the toddler was placed in a Government hospital in the care of the Sri Lankan nanny.
It was also learnt that the Chinese woman was employed as a performer at a night club in Dubai.
