(COLOMBO) – Colombo has sought the assistance of Thailand to assist in the safe return to the country of a group of Sri Lankans that were recently rescued from a cyber slave camp Myawaddy-Myanmar, a statement from the Foreign Office stated on Thursday.
The request was communicated during a telephone conversation on Thursday morning between the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara, the statement added.
The Thai Foreign Minister had agreed to facilitate the repatriation of the Sri Lankans rescued from the cyber slave camp in Myawaddy via Thailand at the very earliest.
According to the statement, a total of eight Sri Lankans who are currently under the Myanmar Government protection in Myawaddy have been provided with required assistance including meals and basic necessities with the facilitation of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon.
The Foreign Ministry is also continuing to work towards the rescue and repatriation of the remaining Sri Lankans trapped in the Myawaddy area, the statement added.
A large number of foreigners mainly from South and South East Asia are currently being held in the cyber slave camp in Myawaddy after being tricked by human traffickers of lucrative employment.
