(COLOMBO) – At least 15 persons including seven school students were injured when the private passenger transport bus in which they travelling overturned at a location in Southern Sri Lanka on Thursday morning, police and hospital officials said.
They said the accident occurred on the Wellawaya-Thanamalwila Road some 302 kilometres from the commercial capital of Colombo.
A sudden ailment suffered by the bus driver is believed to be the cause of the accident, according to the local police. However they said they were investigating further.
Drivers of private owned passenger buses are notoriously known for reckless and fast driving and in some cases they are found to be intoxicated with narcotics.
It was only the other day that one dozen drivers and conductors of private passenger buses were arrested by police during a sudden inspection at a central bus station in the Colombo.
Passengers have also been provided with an emergency number to reach out to the nearest police patrol should they suspect that the bus crew may be in a state of intoxication.
