Foreigners entering Sri Lanka and seeking a driving license could obtain it swiftly and efficiently on arrival at the airport in exchange for a minimum fee from April 15, State Minister of Transport Lasantha Alagiyawanna said in Friday.
Arrangements towards this end has been finalized in collaboration with the Department of Immigration and Emigration, the Civil Aviation Authority and the Ministry of Tourism to provide driving licenses to foreign tourists that are seeking to have them, he said.
The fees for obtaining a driving license are as follows: US$ 25 for one month, US$ 50 for three months, US$ 75 for six months, and US$ 200 for a year and beyond.
According to analysts the move is aimed largely at promoting the tourist industry in the cash-strapped island-nation.
However, they added that it will also bring an end to tourists driving and riding vehicles minus a valid driving license where there is no accountability in the case of an accident and so on.
