(COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka’s left-leaning Party the National People’s Power (NPP) has called on the Government to investigate thoroughly the recent statement made by former President Maithripala Sirisena who claimed that he was aware of the true persons behind the Easter Sunday attacks in April, 2019 that left over 250 persons killed and an equal number or more injured, many maimed for life.
NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said they will implement the law against those who were responsible for the attacks and towards this end the Party has provided membership to the police official that led the investigations into the attack.
Dissanayake made this remark to a packed house of expatriate Party faithful in Vancouver, Canada on Monday.
Speaking at a meeting with the Sri Lankan community in Vancouver, Canada, he said there was no need for fresh investigations into the Easter Sunday bombings and that several issues that had arisen through investigations need to be ascertained.
“The police officials who conducted investigations into the Easter Sunday bombings are now retired and working with the NPP. The police chief who led the investigations will in future head the Retired Police Forum that is to be launched by the NPP in May. We will mete out justice to the victims and bring the culprits to book,” he said.
Commenting on Sirisena’s recent remark he said: “”It is a serious statement by the then President who was also the Defence Minister at that time. He even went on to serve as the President for seven months after the attacks,” he said.
In a related development former President Maithripala Sirisena gave a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday.
Public Security Minister Tiran Alas had earlier instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to conduct an urgent investigation into the statement made by the former President recently where he claimed that he knew the people involved in the Easter Sunday bomb attacks on April 21, 2019.
