(COLOMBO) – The Sri Lankan police and security forces were placed on high alert in Christian places of worship throughout the country since Thursday night as the faithful observed Good Friday, a senior official said.
He said police officers, together with the priests and boards of trustees of churches have prepared security plans while the Holy Masses are in progress from 29 – 31 March and towards this end they have urged the public to cooperate with the authorities.
Under this security plan, the church premises are to be inspected before the commencement of the services and body searchers will take place if deemed necessary, he said.
Special attention has been given to churches that attract crowds in large numbers. Additionally, the assistance of the Special Task Force (STF) and the Tri-Forces personnel will be obtained in the event the number of police officers deployed to churches is inadequate, he said.
The island-nation is still reeling from the devastating suicide bombings that claimed the lives of more than 250 people and injured hundreds of others on Easter Sunday in 2019.
