(COLOMBO) – The Sri Lankan health authorities have launched an immediate probe into the activities of fake doctors and illegal private medical facilities following a rise in number of complaints from victims and the general public.
“It is mandatory for all doctors to register themselves with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC), while the private medical institutions are required to be registered at the provincial level”, a statement from the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.
It stated that complaints have been received regarding a number of unregistered doctors and medical centres currently operating across the island.
Director General of Health Services has instructed all provincial and district level authorities to initiate an immediate investigation into the matter, and to take strict legal action against all unregistered doctors and private medical institutions.
Meanwhile, the Health Ministry also urges the general public to provide information regarding such bogus doctors and related health facilities.
The exact number of fake doctors and health centers in the country are not known, but it is believed that it could be in the many thousands.
